Hypertension is elevated pressure in the arteries. It is the most common cardiovascular disease and a major public health problem in both developed and developing countries. Most people with hypertension experience no symptoms and the condition may go undetected for years. A common manifestation is headaches or visual disturbances but most often hyper-tension is discovered during a routine physical examination or, less commonly, when a patient experiences one of the various complications. These complications are serious and affect various vital organs: the brain, the heart and the kidneys.
